Have I Ever Told You About My Friend, Yoko?

She’s Japanese and cool. I was in her year in Newpark and is one of the most loveliest people you could ever meet. A real heart-on-their-sleeve kind of person, more so than anyone else I’ve ever met. She was the one who introduced me to “Letters To A Young Poet”.

So I anyway, I sent Yoko the emails and texts and stuff about my birthday party and she didn’t reply. But she text me this morning seeing if I wanted to meet up for lunch. Now I haven’t seen Yoko since I dropped out, but we’ve kept in touch somewhat by email. So I was worried like, “man, I haven’t talked to Yoko since I was a Jazzer” and she’d be a bit older than me so I was worried that we might not have alot to talk about.

How wrong was I?! …She treated me to lunch for my birthday! And she even bought me a book as a birthday present! I was so touched – it was so thoughtful of her. Some of my “closest” friends who I see regularly won’t offer anything other than a Jagerbomb!

We had a great chat at lunch and it was great to catch up with her. I’m going to return the favour for her birthday – it’s in February.

A New York Minute

I have a romanticized version of New York City. I wasn’t disappointed when I finally visited The Big Apple last September – The atmosphere, the people, the cultures, in my opinion a truly American city where people pool their uniqueness to form a commune of individuals. I often compare this “American ideal” to that of a small Jazz ensemble, whereby each player brings their own musical personality to contribute to the combined efforts of the group.

New York is where Jazz music developed throughout the 40s, 50s and 60s. And of course it continues to develop there today but Jazz has since spread it’s wings and now develops all over the world in countless different ways. But it can all be traced back to the Harlem Bebop scene of the 40s.

I like New York geographical terminology: lower west side, upper east side, downtown, uptown, midtown etc. Oh and not to mention China Town, Little Italy, The Village, Soho, Harlem and all the other districts contained within that relatively small island.

I like Dublin too but there are only two – north and south.

They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away. But what about two?

It’s funny how the start of one day is dependant on the end of the day before. My today did not get off to a good start – I went to bed late last night. Not late, like eleven. But that is late when your alarm goes off at 5am and you want to be up by 05:50 so that you can get showered, dressed, and fed in order to be out the door at 06:15 to get the 06:28 train.

I woke up at 06:18 today. I got up at 06:31 today. I missed the train today. So I decided get the next one-the 06:58-so I needed to be out the door at 06:45 today. PANIC! I shower and dress and it’s 06:41. I gel my hair, brush my teeth, tie my shoe laces – 06:44! Put on my coat, grab an apple and I’m out the door and hop into the car. I break the speed limit on the way to the train station and park hurriedly. Thank God I brought my umbrella (it’s raining). I rush on the packed platform as the train pulls in.

“Panic over”, I think as I board the train. I get on and I realise that the train was already really full before it even arrived in Rush and Lusk. And people are still boarding! …I’m angry now.

I just felt so uncomfortable. Every movement people made near me irritated me; I was infuriated at the sight of my fellow commuters; A guy got on at the next station and I just didn’t like the look of him – He was short, had bulging eyes, buck teeth, looked like he hadn’t washed since 1999, when he partied like it was 1999! And he’s leaning against the wall near my spot! My personal space!! And hands – horrible little hobbit hands! I can’t stop thinking that my day will never improve. I briefly think about the pros and cons of first degree murder (mainly the pros) as the hobbit man shifts his position. I try to think positive / happy thoughts but I can’t bring myself to so much as smile insincerely.

We pulled into Pearse Street train station around 07:35. Because I’m a considerate person I had decided to postpone eating my apple until I got off the train – I didn’t want to bother people with my chewing noises. I begin to munch as I step onto the platform.

Things seem ok. Not amazing – grand. I get into work and buy a pain au chocolate. Chocolate in the morning is the start of my change for the better (I thank the French – whichever Frenchman thought of chocolate surrounded by a croissant should be given a medal!!). I also eat a banana.

Then I do my study. Today I was studying case studies that demonstrate the benefits of regulation of the insurance market.

It’s after my study and half way though my second apple that I begin to feel amazing. For no reason, I just begin to smile. All seems right with world. I’m cracking jokes, laughing with my colleagues.

I’m so happy I could start a blog…
